I am not sure, but I am guessing that it really isn't a "lump," but fairly your throat muscles contracting, making it feel approaching there is something within it.

When a person is joyful and laughing, their stomach muscles tense up (contract) to form a giggle.

Sounds similar to you are allergic to something in your room. If you enjoy carpeting then consider taking it out. Do you enjoy a feather or down pillow or comforter? Try removing those. It could be something coming up a vent from another apartment (smoke?), something you use within the laundry...etc. Chemical allergies are more common than you'd regard. You could try taking things out one at a time and see if it helps. More than that, I'd vote go to a upright allergist and get tested. I have lots of problems with my eyes, afterwards found out I'm allergic to a ton of stuff.
