Ok i own a hooka. Some people read aloud that depending on how tobacco you use its like smoking 7 cigs at a time. A hookah is newly a bowl that has a long hose to suck tobacco out of. There are tons restaurants and cafes that own hookah's that you can rent and smoke out of. They have their own product nearby to smoke, it is completely legal, but I'm not sure what the stuff is that you smoke, it doesn't partiality much like tobacco.

My Father has have a stroke and he knows adjectives of us, however he is paralized on the right side. He is having difficulty swallowing because of this and he is trying to cooperate to us. He mumbles words, but for the most part we cannot deduce him. He'll say a undamaged sentence and use expressions, but the words are all alike when they come out. We want to know what he needs and if he could spell next to magnetic alphabet junk mail. I don't know if he can translate to spelling or not. Pray for us, he is trying so very tough. Any good concept that folks have tried within the past possibly, would be a blessing for us. He's insulted when we ask him things, however it's all impressively new (3 weeks ago, Aug 4, 2006) PT's & OT's are working near him in the Nursing Home. He is 85 years prehistoric. Thanks to all! My grandma have suffered several strokes before. Not to verbs, I'm sure your dad will recuperate through proper diet, exercise and medication.
I know the initial frustration contained by communcation for both the patient and their nearest and dearest. However, all problems can be overcome next to time and understanding.
During the initial time, I usually communicate with my grandma through pictorials or pictures. She only points to what she wants. You can also try conversation to your dad slowly and try to makeout what he is try to say.

i am so sorry & i know how bad it is for youall but believe me it's so frustrating for him,you cannot suppose because i have be there & i know . he probably understand everything you say, can you grasp him a chalkboard & chalk to use, it may work. sometimes we can scribble near the other hand beside that. i am sure he gets almost angry when you can't construe him. it is so bad , i do not have an idea that the magnetic correspondence will work but i guess they could . get some play things for kids ,similar to for a play house drink can, milk, cookie etc. anything you think he might be trying to read aloud & that way he can only just pick it up & he will relax & the words will start to come again. i wish you & yours the unbelievably best & i will say a prayer right very soon in jesus pet name !!

please keep within mind that a stroke is from the brain. with his, speech effect, his read and writing and spelling could be as well. every stroke object is different.
from what you are saying he is have difficulty swallowing, so therefore i am intensely surprised that speech is not working beside him , he is an aspiration risk.

My father had throat cancer due to smoking, and when he first come out of the hospital everything sounded the same out of his mouth as powerfully. At first we gave him a pen and tabloid and he would just write down the far-reaching words within a sentence and we'd ask him "Do you want the <item>" and eventually you will follow some words from him and he will be able to clarify his words a touch better as well. my mother is also a stroke victum paralized on her right side also...it took us a long time but we came up beside our own little sign language, when she required a drink she would wave her foot at about chalice lenghtth over the tabel. if she wanted to walk somewhere shed make her fingers look similar to legs and walk them. but to start near we had give her a pointer to point at things she needed and when she did good we surrounded by a good route let her know she be doing great i always feel bad i didnt want her to be aware of like a child. its deffinetly sturdy to have to operation with from both ends. its really al contained by knowing your father his facial expressions and needs. time and patientence will generate it all ok!! i need you and your father all my best. and know this to shall draw from better!!
I have never be through what you are experiencing right now. My suggestion is that of "Baby Einstein". Try to instruct him simple things with paw gestures (most of which are competent to be done with one hand) My 1 year weak niece and 2 year old nephew use "primary signing" to communicate. Look up the Baby Einstein tapes, it may abet. I am guessing because as you said you are not sure if he is comprehending even magnet letters. My prayers are next to you and your family. Also, if the above is not an choice; my mother in imperative was not competent to communicate at all at age 85. I would settle to her and look at her eyes. From knowing the person, you can ask them "yes" and "no" question, they are able to answer these and they can relate too short comprimising their dignity.
