I don't know that they are made to break down, I have hear though that putting the plastic bottles in the freezer is bleak for you. I don't remember where I read that but the article said that it be bad for you because when the hose freezes to the plastic bottle when it melts again it can contain traces of the chemicals used to gross the plastic which could be carcinogenic.
