Is it true that siemen is sterile once it hits the upper air?
Answers: Do you mean sterile as within non-functioning sperm, or sterile as in bacteria-free?
I'm assuming that you expect non-functioning sperm. The sperm will die once they are no longer in a showery and warm environment. They may live up to a hour surrounded by a wet spot on the bedding however, once that have dried, that is the expire of the sperm's life.
So the answer to your question would be that hitting the air would not put together semen die right away.
