Should nurses be expected to desire who is resuscitated?
Answers: Nurses aren't expected to put together this decision at any time beneath any circumstances. When a person codes (goes into respiratory arrest or full arrest) they will normally have an Advance Directive, a agreed Code status or a family contestant available to speak for them. Code status refers to Full Code, Chemical Code and No Code. A Full Code is do whatever it take, CPR, equipment and medication to resuscitate. A Chemical Code is don't use CPR or equipment but use medications. A No Code is a DNR, Do Not Resuscitate.
Code status is strictly observed if it is agreed at the time of a code. If the Code status is not known, the sound assumption is to begin full resuscitation attempts. Once intubated a merciful cannot be extubated without a judgment made jointly by the patient's representative and the Bioethics Committee of a hospital and, subsequently, a doctor's establish to do so.
I hope you understand that while policy and procedure vary somewhat from one hospital to another, this protocol is generally equal wherever you shift. I also hope you understand and that it is crystal clear that we nurses do not cause this decision independently or arbitrarily.
