Echinacea - what is it and does it work?

I'm a bit of a cynic when it comes to herbal / alternative medicine but I've be getting more than my fair share of colds this year and so several people hold recommended this that I'm thinking of trying it. Does it actually stop you catching a cold or does it assistance with the symptoms when you enjoy one - or both?
Grateful for any experience / opinion.
Thanks

Answers:    The overall evidence from a few studies is that echinacea is pretty useless, though one recent study suggested it may reduce the average number of days spent per year next to cold symptoms by about 3 days! The investigators suggested that since it required taking the stuff every daylight, even if this was correct ( a certainty not borne out by earlier studies), that it still be not worth while taking it.

Echinacea or purple coneflower is a North American perennial plant that is indigenous to the interior plains where it grows on road bank, prairies, fields and surrounded by dry, open woods, from the prairie states northward to Pennsylvania.
i am a big enthusiast of herbal remedies as i hate tablets and echinacea tea is adjectives i take for colds. the moment i touch a sniffle coming along i take it and after roughly two cups say morning and evening its adjectives cleared and to prevent catching colds at all u could run a cup a day. i noticeably recommend it.
