What exactly cause a character to "lose" their voice?

I know screaming, yelling, conversation loudly, and even coughing for long periods of time can breed one hoarse, but why?

Answers: It is basically over exertion, concerned of like when you bring sore from over working or straining a muscle. The vocal cords can also suffer from this and it take time to heal once it occur.
