What is a doctor referral? what does it look close to? does it oscillate from doctor to doctor or from HMO to HMO?

i will be designing a patient portal wherein patients can request doctor referral online? i want to know what information are contained in a doctor referral. is it innovative from one clinic to the other? or does HMO's dictate the format of a doctor referral. Once created, does a patient pick it up within the clinic or the doctor forwards it to the referred doctor and HMO. sorry, im not familiar next to the process. could anyone explain how the process works?

Answers:    I've never done it online. But if your primary doctor wants you to see a specialist, you loaf until that specialist's nurse calls you to set up the appt. That's how HPN's HMO does it.

Once, however, I needed to see a dermatologist, and the doctor give me a piece of paper near the office I looked-for to go to be circled by my primary. I just call there, and set up the appt. myself, and took that referral sheet next to me. So I guess it depends on which kind of specialist you want to see. That's the best I can do! Hope it helped!! :)
