Answers: I notice your question as I looked to answer this interrogate myself. It is somewhat more difficult to find these numbers for Canada, so statistics for the USA will be used.
Over the course of a 20 year period from 1979 to 1998 nearby were a total of 214,575 death attributed to drugs.
Of these 214,575 deaths, 44,727 be due to illegal drug use.
Of those 44,727 in that were 38,286 cause by accidental heroin and cocaine overdose.
In summary, undemocratic drug use accounts for just beneath 21% of all drug induced death, while prescription drugs accounted for 169,848 deaths or over 79% of drug induced death.
To put it in perspective, within that same period 67,396 those died from choking on food or things other than food, while 378,960 relatives died from alcohol induced causes.
