Is alum harmful ?

L'alum is used for deodorants supposed to be healthier than mundane ones. My mother uses it because all the other ones she tried irritated her.

However the MSDS I read (from the "Avocado" center) read aloud :

Aluminium ammoniumium sulfate dodecahydrate
Designation :
CORROSIVE
Risk Phrases
R34 Causes burns.

and in another sheet (newer ?) :
Aluminium potassium sulfate dodecahydrate
Designation :
IRRITANT
Risk Phrases
R36/37/38 Irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin.

Can you explain to me more about this substance ?
Please supply your sources.

Answers:    It is also used in some types of foods, pickles for one, and is the alive ingredient in styptic pencils, used to stop bleeding from minor cuts.

Look at the concentrations required to be dangerous. Too much salt can be brutal too, but I'm not going to stop using it on mashed potatoes. I looked it up on the Hazardous Substances Data Bank, which said this:

/SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS/ ...Simpler salt, such as... the simple sulfate, are capable of evoking irritant effects at biological interfaces. Even here, such effects usually require relatively massive dosing or protracted skin contact; when they ar inhaled, irritation can also be seen at superior doses, particularly near respirable particulate sizes.

It's fine in an anti-perspirant. Remember that even marine has a n MSDS sheet.
not contained by small quantities but elevated concentration may harm...
