The bubonic plaugue?
Answers: SARS and avian flu cause respiratory disease. These might own potential to spread like plague did but they do not have similar symptoms, except contained by cases of plague pneumonia, which are transmitted between people and cause similar symptoms. Plague is also the result of bacterial infection, while the former two are virus.
Plague does occur today in some places, more regularly in the developing world but even in parts of the United States (near California I think).
A disease to be exact far more well known within the developed world is meningoccocal disease. This can progress in a similar way to septicaemic plague, cause sepsis, shock and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) which can result in rashes or gangrene. Both produce rapid death except treated quickly.
Another bacterial disease carried by rodents and spread to humans by arthropod bites or through inhalation is Tularemia, most commonly associated with rabbits. This mimics plague within many ways, such as causing the lymph nodes to swell. Tularemia is not moderately as deadly as plague though.
