I just got a unbreakable retainer on my lower teeth today. I know that it is recommended to wear it for life, but my bottom teeth were never that doomed to failure. So, if I take it off within 5 years or so, do you think it would matter? or would my teeth go and get WORSE than they were originally? Because if they're just going fund to what they were originally, then I don't really vigilance. Thanks!

Its not a retainer that comes surrounded by and out of your mouth that you keep in a plastic box on your nightstand.

What is individual referred to is a PERMANENT retainer which is placed on the back of your teeth by cement just approaching you had braces.

I can tell you first paw, I had the permanent retainer from when my braces come off at age 15.

At age 34, my dentist told me that I don't need it anymore and she removed it (mind you dentist made the edict not the Orthodontist).

3 years later, my teeth are overlapping each other again. Need to return with braces again :(

If the Ortho says you need it afterwards you need it. Once its on and you are comfortable with it you wont ever know it's within (your dentist will notice but thats it).

Wish I hadn't let her embezzle it off :( :( :(

Me too. I still have mine within. Been in for ten years as well. My orthodontist insists he will never bring it out even though I asked him about it.
My best friend who had that same retainer have an ortho that had taken it off, because to that doctor it's individual a temporary retainer (when it is not), and he took it out a year or two after she was done beside the braces, and her bottom teeth reverted pretty much to their old shape. Sad.
I'm glad my ortho insists for me to have it surrounded by. 'Cause apparently teeth can still shift throughout adult life.
I would say aloud, if you paid for your braces then do anything you want retainer-wise, but if your parents paid for it, you better keep your responsibilities up.

i don't feel your teeth will be worse, but i still think that you shoul.d wear it for as long as possible. good luck! i'd wear it for time. they are called permanent for a sense! You have to wear it for life - I hold to.

It's not a big deal - I've had mine for 10years - and I don't even make out it anymore.
